WHY ALL RECRUITERS NEED TO INVEST IN THEIR PERSONAL BRAND
Written By Hishem Azzouz
I LEARNT THE HARD WAY
Over my first twelve months in recruitment, I learnt a lot: how to use the database (proactively calling candidates who weren’t expecting my call); I learnt how to use job boards (calling candidates who’d uploaded their CV online), I learnt how to use LinkedIn (sending tons of cold InMails to potential candidates/clients); I learnt how to make business development calls.
At the end of these twelve months I asked myself the question, “WHAT ELSE CAN I BE DOING TO ACQUIRE THE ATTENTION OF CANDIDATES OR CLIENTS WHO I KNOW I CAN HELP?”
This question alone has put me on an amazing journey, and I want to share with you what I have learnt along the way…
WHY SHOULD YOU INVEST IN YOUR PERSONAL BRAND IF YOU’RE A RECRUITER?
Because it’s what you’re currently doing – you do it every single day, the only difference being that you do it offline. You do it in your one on one meetings/phone calls with your candidates and clients, every single day. It’s just about flipping this and doing it in the online world as well.
You still have to do everything you’re currently doing – this isn’t to replace proactive sales activity. It’s about blending branding and sales, which together are an extremely powerful mix!
Your brand is an asset. It’s not owned by the recruitment company you work for. It’s not owned by your manager. IT’S YOURS, YOURS TO KEEP FOREVER!
Which means you can use this asset in your current job and in all of your future jobs – or maybe, even in your very own recruitment business in the future. That sounds like a great deal to me.
WHY REACH HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHEN YOU CAN REACH THOUSANDS?
When this clicked in my head, it became so clear to me: I’m limited to the amount of people I can get hold of in one day. I’m limited when it comes to the amount of people I can meet in one day, as well.
BUT, if I can create content and distribute it online, the amount of people I can reach is 100X. I can share one post online and reach thousands of potential candidates/clients.
Now does that mean that every time I post something it’s going to reach thousands of people? No, it doesn’t. But I can get in front of more people in one day than I ever could using traditional methods, FACT!
This sounded like a no brainer to me so I put myself out of my comfort zone and started sharing content online. You should too.
YOU HAVE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO GET WELL AHEAD OF ALL OF YOUR COMPETITORS!
If you’re in recruitment, you will have an element of competitiveness in you. The main reason I started investing in my personal brand was because I looked at what all of my competitors were doing online and it was absolutely FUCK ALL!
I would do anything to give myself a competitive edge – when I realised this, all that was going through my head was OPPORTUNITY, OPPORTUNITY AND MORE OPPORTUNITY!
This is a REAL opportunity right now, to get ahead of all of the people who still don’t believe that marketing themselves is a good idea.
Would you rather be the person who starts and tries now? Or, would you rather be the person who looks back in two/three/five years’ time saying, “SHIT, why did I not start earlier?!”
I know which person I would rather be….
YOUR CANDIDATES & CLIENTS ATTENTION IS ON THEIR MOBILE DEVICE
You will probably be reading this on your mobile phone. We all live on our phones – just take a look around when you commute to work or when you're on your lunch break. WE’RE ALL ON OUR PHONES!
So the question is, what are you doing to get in front of your candidates/clients when THEY’RE on THEIR phones?
You can call them as many times as you want. You can leave as many voicemails as you want. You can email them as much as you want. This is a way of getting them on their mobile. OR, you can create valuable content and communicate with them that way.
This means the next time you call them there is a chance that they may have some context on who you are – AND it will give you something else to talk about BESIDES the latest jobs that you have!
I DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO INVEST IN MY PERSONAL BRAND
You do. Stop lying to yourself. Not having time is a poor excuse.
What can help with maximising your time is to stop spending those 30 minutes (at least) a day, scrolling aimlessly through LinkedIn (if you’re like me, it’s probably longer than 30 minutes, while we’re being honest).
Plus, you should be documenting the content you’ve made and not always creating. This way you have a better chance in staying consistent with your content production!
What I mean by this is the content that you share online should be what you’re talking about with your candidates/clients on a daily basis. Advising on the current market, consulting on salary expectations or even just about the recent person you helped!
Documenting over creating.
WHAT’S THE ROI?
I’m just going to use myself as my own best case study for this. Since asking myself that question twelve months into recruitment, I have been on such an interesting journey. That in my opinion has proved to me that it has been well worth the time and investment.
I started my own recruitment blog, I started my own recruitment podcast, I met people I never would have if I didn’t invest in my personal brand, I made more placements, I generated more inbound business. I wouldn’t be in the job I was now, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do public speaking, I wouldn’t be living in London… There are so many things that wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t make this decision.
My point is, you really don’t know the types of opportunities that will come your way! Which I find rather exciting – and you should too ….
How do I know it has generated inbound business? Because it’s exactly what happened when I was in recruitment and it’s how I have closed all of the deals I have in my current role right now.
HOW CAN YOU START?
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay Hishem, I get your point. But how the hell do I start?”
Feel free to drop me a message. I love talking about this and I love helping people.
